This is a little ritual for luck. It’s my favorite superstition, and it is rather charming. I believe it fills my days with prosperity and wonder. The tradition probably originated in Britain in the early 20th century. The ritual consists of pronouncing thrice “Rabbit” on the first day of each month, and if you want it to work for certain, those should be your first words of the month. It has to be a triple repetition of the word, since three is a magical number.
I have done the rabbit spell for more than 10 months now, and I believe it shields me from bad luck and attracts good fortune. Yesterday was the first of June, so I woke up and was still in my bed, eyes closed, I murmured “Rabbit, rabbit!” almost in my dream. That’s the correctest way I have performed the spell, since I usually forget about it, and it is never my first three words of the month.
President Roosevelt
USA President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was reportedly known to have believed in this superstition himself, performing the rabbit spell at the beginning of every month. He also disliked the number 13, as us unlucky number and refused to travel on Friday, the 13th. Mostly he was a very superstitious person, and as he was a good president, he must have been rather lucky.
The symbol of the rabbit
The rabbit itself is a symbol related to fertility and gentleness. It symbolises new beginnings, creativity, abundance, and the birth of ideas. No wonder yesterday I had the idea of reviving my blog with my enchanting journaling. So, if you believe in spirit animals, you should invoke the energy of the rabbit whenever you want to start something new. It’s a soft, fluffy, small animal, fertile, smart as Bugs Bunny and highly sensitive. In both Western and Eastern traditions, the rabbit is a good omen. In Celtic mythology, white rabbits are messengers from the Otherworld, like angels. The white rabbit also stars in the beloved children’s book Alice in Wonderland, where it leads Alice to her magical adventure.
